Unit Study Guides (Objectives) Course Policies

GUIDELINES:

Course Description

(Prerequisites: A combination of either BIO 123L or BIO 121L and CHEM 111L or CHEM 121L) Anatomy and Physiology I is an integrated study of human structure and function that covers the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. BIOL 237 is a major's level course designed to meet the needs of students in the allied health sciences, and its curriculum and level of testing is oriented toward those students. See also: [How to Have Success in A&P]

There is an accompanying laboratory, BIOL 247L

It is strongly suggested that you take BIOL 247L and BIOL 237 simultaneously. These courses complement one another and information gleaned in one will be relied upon in the other.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Identify and describe the major anatomical features of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.

Identify and describe the functional characteristics of the major tissues of the human body.

Critically discuss the physiological processes of the above systems.

Integrate the anatomy and physiology of the organ systems.

Infer function from anatomical structure.

Understand the roles of the organ systems in maintaining homeostasis.

Course Requirements and Policies

Withdrawal:

Students are expected to attend class and are responsible for obtaining information about missed work and assignments or announcements. Students wishing to withdraw must do so through I-tel. All withdrawals before  April 14th, 2006 will automatically receive a WP.   After that date, in order to withdraw, students must present documentation of a family or medical emergency and receive approval of college dean; WP or WF will be assigned as appropriate: WP requires 70% average on all tests.

Incomplete Grade:

Incompletes are not intended to avoid failure or withdrawal and will not be used for that purpose.

Requirements for grade of "Incomplete" (I):

1. Student must have completed more than 50% of the semester's work.

2. Student must have an average of 70% or higher.

3. Student must have a documented family or medical emergency which prevents them from completing the semester.

4. All grades already earned will be combined with additional grades to make up I.

5. It is expected that the I will be made up during the following semester (summer excepted). Extension of one additional semester may be given only with good cause. No extension beyond that will be allowed.

Grading Procedure:

Four 100-point unit tests will be given plus a 200-point Final Exam which is cumulative over the entire semester. The lowest unit test is dropped. No makeup tests will be given. A missed unit test, regardless of the reason missed, will be the test which is dropped. Final grade will be based on percentage of points earned out of points possible:  198-100 A+,   90-97 A, 89 A-, 88 B+, 80-87 B, 79 B-, 78 C+, 70-77 C, 69 C-, 68 D+, 60-67 D,   59 D-, <59  F. A student earning 90% on each of the four unit tests may exempt the final exam. At the end of the semester, points from WebCT Extra Credit Quizzes and Case Histories etc. will be added to total points earned before percentage is determined. Extra points will not figure into any mid-semester calculation, nor can they be used to exempt the final exam, or to earn a grade of A+.

There is an additional opportunity to earn 5 extra points by submitting a Student Survey, signing up for the class Listserv, and taking the Introduction Quiz on the use of web materials on WebCT.

First: Read Orientation to Using WebCT, linked to the main class web page: http://webanatomy.net/unmanatomy.htm.

Next: Log on to WebCT (http://webct.unm.edu) using your UNM NetID and password.

Then: Find the first assignment and complete it: read the required pages, fill out and submit the student survey,

and sign up for the Listserv.

Finally: Peruse the materials available and take the Introduction Quiz.

Once the survey and quiz are submitted and you have signed up for the Listserv, you will be credited with 5 extra points.

NOTE: The deadline for completing this assignment to receive the extra points is Feb. 17, 2006. Extra points do not contribute to exempting the final exam.

*The grade of A+ is reserved for the top 2% of students and requires a full 98% without rounding and without any extra points which may have been available.
