GUIDELINES:

Biology 247L is a cadaver-based laboratory designed to accompany Biology 237, Human Anatomy and Physiology I. As with BIOL 237 Prerequisites are Introductory Biology and Introductory Chemistry (BIOL 121/121L or BIOL 123/124L and CHEM 111/111L or CHEM 121/121L). Topics include basic histology and the study of the following organ systems: integumentary, skeletal, articulations, muscular, and nervous. It is strongly suggested that you take BIOL 247L and BIOL 237 simultaneously. The courses are designed to complement one another and information gleaned in one will be relied upon in the other.

Required Texts:

**Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual 7th Ed., by Elaine Marieb.  Some lab manuals are packaged along with the Guide to ADAM Interactive Anatomy at a significant savings over the individual costs.

Lab Syllabus (Lab Guide): (Available online only.)

Optional Text: The Anatomy Coloring Book, by Kapit & Elson

Other Required Materials:

You will be required to purchase and bring your own vinyl or latex gloves. A lab coat is recommended to protect clothing and skin from chemicals and stains. Drawing paper and pencils may be required by your instructor.

Grading:

1) 3 on-line and 8 in-class quizzes will be given. Each is worth 15 points. Only 10 quizzes will count towards your grade allowing you to drop or miss 1 quiz, resulting in a total of 150 points. Students will have 2 chances to take the on-line quiz during the open quiz period and scores will be averaged;

2) 3 lab practical exams worth 50 points, each, for a total of 150 points.

The final grade is based on the points earned out of 300 possible:

294-300=A+,     270-293=A,     267-269=A-

264-266=B+,     240-263=B,     237-239=B-.

234-236=C+,     210-233=C,     207-209=C-.

204-206=D+,     180-203=D,     177-179=D-.

below 177=F.

Attendance and Other Policies:

Attendance
Much of the work, including assignments and some quizzes, can be done either online or in the lab. There will be deadlines which must be adhered to and certain tests which must be taken on campus. These are indicated on the syllabus, as well as the WebCT calendar.  It is the students responsibility to be aware of deadlines and to complete assignments on time. All online quizzes are taken via WebCT, but all assignments must be submitted in person. BE SURE TO FIND OUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR'S POLICY ON DEADLINES, AND MAKEUP  WORK.

Availability

The lab rooms are open and available for work on computers, or with models, slides and cadavers with the following stipulations:

Lab rooms and materials will not be available when an instructor is using them for quiz or testing purposes.

Lab rooms and materials will not be available during the period lab practical exams are being given.

Withdrawal

Students will receive a WP when withdrawn by April 14, 2006. After that date withdrawal requires a documented family or medical emergency and approval of Dean and student will receive WP/WF as appropriate.

Incomplete Grade

Incompletes are not intended to avoid failure or withdrawal and will not be used for that purpose.

Requirements for grade of "Incomplete" (I):
1. Student must have completed more than 50% of the semester's work.
2. Student must have an average of 70% or higher.
3. Student must have a documented family or medical emergency which prevents them from completing the semester.
