Guidelines: Biology 249 lab is designed as a combination class of both the regular Bio 247 and 248 labs with a focus on the cadaver examination. Students are expected to have already taken the A&P I and II lecture courses (237/238) and/or their equivalent as well as their labs. This
course is intended as a review class for students who are already familiar with basic human anatomy and physiology but have not studied human cadavers.
Textbooks: Options
Because students should have already had basic human Anatomy and Physiology they may use any textbook of their choosing from a prior course provided that the diagrams and terminology are sufficient for detailed study of human cadaver, skeletal and histological materials. If you are unsure if your text is adequate, please consult with the instructor.
Otherwise you may be asked to purchase Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual (6th Ed.) by E. Marieb.
Required: Lab Syllabus: Students are required to purchase or download from the course website a lab syllabus packet that contains essential terms lists and diagrams for the course. It is necessary to obtain both the 247 Lab Guide and 248 Lab Guide. This list should contain all the terminology students will be held responsible for knowing for the course.
Optional: The Anatomy Coloring Book, by Kapit and Elson; also Atlas of Human
Anatomy, by F. Netter.
Other Required Materials: Students must bring their own lab coat and latex or vinyl gloves to each class. These items will not be provided for students and there is no room to store them between lab sessions. Colored pens or pencils will be helpful for drawing diagrams of structures.
Attendance and Participation: Students are expected to attend all scheduled lab sessions. If you miss a lab (or know you will miss a lab) please contact me to find out what you missed. It is the student's responsibility to obtain information about missed work. It is NOT possible to make-up missed quizzes. If you miss more than 2 labs it may be recommended that you drop the course. This lab covers a lot of material and you may not be able to catch up.
Exams and Class Assignments:
There will be eight quizzes and two homework assignment. Each of these will be worth 10 points. I will drop the lowest of the nine scores. There will be a quiz at the beginning of class each week, Students are expected to be on time and prepared for the quiz. Students arriving late to class will not be given extra time to complete the quiz. Students more than 10 minutes late may not be allowed to take the quiz at all. In addition, there will be a midterm practical and a final practical. These will each be worth 40 points. Therefore, there will be a total of 170 possible points for the semester. Final grades will done in accordance with UNM's fractionalized grading system.
Withdrawal from Course: Students will receive a WP when withdrawn by Nov. 8th . From then to Dec 6th withdrawal requires the approval of the Dean and the student will receive WP/WF as appropriate. No withdrawals will be given after Dec 6th .
Policy for Incomplete Grade: Incompletes are not intended to avoid failure or withdrawal and will not be used for that purpose. Requirements for an "Incomplete" grade (I): 1. Student must have completed more than 50% of the semester's work. 2.Student must have an average of 60% or higher. 3. Student must have a documented family or medical emergency which prevents them from completing the semester.
Classroom Courtesy and Conduct: Students are expected to conduct themselves in a courteous and professional manner towards the instructor and their fellow students. Courteous conduct includes turning off or placing on "silent" mode any and all electronic devices such as cell phones, pagers and other equipment so as not to disturb the learning environment. Students will
also behave in a respectful manner with the cadavers and other laboratory materials. Inappropriate and disruptive classroom behavior may be grounds for removal from the course.
Extra Study Time: If you would like to study the cadavers outside of class time, please contact
me. There are a total 18 labs taking place this semester and therefore the cadaver room will
usually be occupied. Therefore studying outside of class time depends on the agreement of the
instructor teaching at that time. This approval MUST be obtained prior to the beginning of class.
Do NOT disrupt another class to gain access to the cadaver lab. If you do obtain approval to
study the cadavers be aware that the students of that class have priority for looking at the
cadavers. Of course, visiting students are expected to behave in a courteous manner.
