Why does the instructor want this information?

1) Knowing the audience makes it possible to tailor lecture and classwork to their special needs and interests.

2) Having a convenient way of contacting class members enables announcements and special information to be easily disseminated.

Since the student must access the website in order to register, this is a way of encouraging students to become familiar with the site and computer literate.
