In this view of the wall of the colon two layers of smooth muscle are visible: the longitudinal muscle whose fibers run parallel to the length of the intestine and which is on the outside, and the circular muscle whose fibers run around the intestine (also called the transverse) and which is toward the inside. NOTE: the longitudinal muscle is found in three distinct bands called the taenia coli. Also note the submucosa, the (here very thin) muscularis mucosae, and the deep clefts of the mucosa. |
