The density of the adenohypophysis (anterior pituitary) is clearly greater than that of the neurohypophysis (posterior pituitary). The adenohypophysis is made of secretory cells (adeno means gland), while the neurohypophysis is comprised of only storage spaces and nerve endings. Note the large blood vessels which are part of the hypophyseal portal system.
