The brain is described in sections based on its embryological development, each of which contains certain adult brain structures. (See Figure 12.3). In linear order they are: The telencephalon consists of the cerebral hemispheres. Each hemisphere has within it the cortex, the white matter, and the basal nuclei.
The diencephalon contains the thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus.
The mesencephalon contains the midbrain.
The metencephalon includes the pons and cerebellum.
The myelencephalon is the medulla oblongata.
The midbrain, pons, and medulla are collectively called the brainstem.
