The brain is described in
sections based on its embryological development, each of which contains
certain adult brain structures. (See Figure 12.3). In linear order they are:
The telencephalon consists of the cerebral hemispheres. Each
hemisphere has within it the cortex, the white matter, and the basal
nuclei.

The diencephalon
contains the thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus.

|
The mesencephalon contains
the midbrain.
|
|
The metencephalon includes
the pons and cerebellum.
|
|
The myelencephalon is the medulla
oblongata.
|
|
The midbrain, pons, and
medulla are collectively called the brainstem.
