Esophagus
There is no
gastroesophageal (or
cardiac) sphincter! The
esophageal muscles at
the lower end of the
esophagus remain
tonically contracted until
peristalsis brings the
bolus of food. These
muscles produce a
functional but not a
structural sphincter.
