Ovary section A woman is born with a limited (but large) number of primordial follicles, each containing a primary oocyte arrested in prophase of Meiosis I.  | When stimulated by FSH a few primordial follicles will become  primary follicles.  | Under continued stimulation by FSH the primary follicle becomes a secodary (growing) follicle  and eventually a mature (Graafian) follicle. | LH causes the completion of Meiosis I to produce a secondary oocyte within the mature follicle. | After ovulation of the secondary oocyte the follicle becomes a corpus luteum. | Each corpus luteum will eventually break down into a corpus albicans.  | ovarian artery and veins  | See also the Virtual Microscope section on female reproductive system.
